Today's banner by Roger Geach: 1070 'Western Gauntlet', known as 'The Glove', rounds the curve at Dawlish Warren with 1Z35, the 1035hrs Plymouth to Paddington relief in July 1974. The clear blue sky was not to last as is often the case and the cloud was rolling in. A Western fan has the front window, enjoying the sound of the loco working or maybe viewing the sea view.

Long way round

Despite the route being an extremely long way round the Great North of Scotland Railway advertised its route to the south via Aberdeen.

This was despite departure being north east via Speyside, east via Craigellachie, Keith and Aberdeen before finally turning south having changed over to the Caledonian Railway or North British Railway.
